Screening of ElBent: Chronicles of Egyptian Women

“El Bent: Chronicles of Egyptian Women” delivers an evening of readings of anonymous, first-hand testimonies from Egyptian women on their experiences with sexual harassment. These testimonies have been collected by the BuSSy Project and OPantish.

Sondos Shabyek is one of the main driving forces behind the “BuSSy Project,” a performing arts group that features Egyptian men and women telling the real stories of sexual violence in Egypt. Ms. Shabayek is also the writer and director of the award-winning short film El Bent(The Girl). El Bent recently was awarded the top prize in the “Women in New Egypt” film competition organized by the British Embassy Egypt and Misr International and will be screed at the event.

We are pleased to have Dr. Adel Iskandar as the evening’s emcee. Dr. Iskandar is a scholar of Arab studies whose research focuses on media and communication. His work deals with media, identity and politics and has lectured extensively on these topics at universities worldwide. His forthcoming research focuses on the role of new media in the Arab world and an international study of memes. Dr. Iskandar, a co-editor of Jadaliyya, teaches at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) and the Communication, Culture and Technology (CCT) program at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Space is limited for this event.
