TIMEP Joins International Day of Solidarity with Egypt’s Detainees

In light of heightened concerns over the astounding number of detainees in Egyptian prisons, the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) joins an international call to stand in solidarity with these many detainees who struggle to achieve their fundamental human rights.

June 21, 2014 has been declared the International Day of Solidarity with Egypt’s detainees. As rights groups have documented tens of thousands of detainees who are being held in Egyptian jails —many of whom are held for months without charge while facing egregious violations of their rights to due process—many around the world have chosen to make shows of solidarity in various ways.

TIMEP has repeatedly called for the repeal of Egypt’s current protest law, which undermines the fundamental right to assembly, and has asked for the release and pardon of activists who have been detained under it. While TIMEP does not claim to support the ideological affiliations of all the detainees listed here, TIMEP stands in solidarity with all of Egypt’s wrongly imprisoned who are denied their basic rights.

Update (August 26, 2014): Nearly a dozen detained activists and demonstrators in Egypt have reportedly gone on hunger strike within the past week to protest the government’s continuing crackdown on dissent and denial of due process to political prisoners. Among the hunger strikers are well-known activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah and Mohammed Ramadan, the attorney for activist Mahienour el-Masry.
