NDP Leadership Resigns

The leadership of the National Democratic Party resigned from office, including Gamal Mubarak, Hosni Mubarak’s son (and increasingly apparent heir-presumptive). Hossam Badrawi, a perceived liberal member of the NDP, was named as the new secretary-general of the party. Hosni Mubarak himself appeared to retain his position in the NDP leadership, though there was confusion on the matter following the announcement.

Hundreds of protesters from Suez arrived in Cairo and called for further protests on February 6, with the date being dubbed “Day of the Martyred.”

Foreign support for a swift but stable transition of power in Egypt appeared to grow, with statements from leaders in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States making the news. In particular, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed American support for newly appointed Vice President Omar Suleiman’s role in spearheading a transition process.
