A rumored determination by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to grant amnesty to former President Hosni Mubarak and his family prompted thousands of protesters to descend upon Tahrir Square today. Despite an official statement by the SCAF denying the “allegations that were published Tuesday in Al-Shorouk newspaper,” demonstrators gathered in what they called the “Friday of Rejecting Apology and Manipulating the Revolution.” The protesters also called for the resignations of the SCAF’s leader, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, and the state Prosecutor-General, Abdel Meguid Mahmoud.
Also today, “hundreds of Coptic protesters” massed outside Maspero to call for Tantawi’s resignation and the release of eight Copts detained yesterday during protests surrounding an attempt to reopen a church in Ain Shams.
