Pope Shenouda III, Leader of the Coptic Church, Dies

Pope Shenouda III, leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, died today after more than forty years as patriarch of the church. As the chief representative of the Christian community to the government and society, Shenouda was remembered as a savvy political operator and a force for national unity, though some criticized his closeness to the Mubarak regime. Shenouda was also an advocate of unity within the Christian community, working with Egyptian Protestants and other denominations in the country as well as promoting closer ties with the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic hierarchies around the world.
