Violent Protests Break Out after Morsi Declares Supreme Presidential Powers

In response to President Morsi’s recent presidential decree, the violent protests broke out between supporters and opponents. Tens of thousands gathered in Tahrir Square and opponents of the president clashed with supporters in Alexandria. The Freedom and Justice Party offices were burned in Suez, Ismailia, and Port Said. Among the critics of the president’s actions were the Wafd Party, Mohamed ElBaradei, Hamdeen Sabbahi, and Amr Moussa.

About 100 people were injured in the day’s violence. In a speech outside the presidential palace, however, President Morsi gave no ground on yesterday’s decree.
