Polls Close, 30% Turnout Reported in Constitutional Referendum


The second day of the constitutional referendum took place today. Voting occurred in Giza, Qalyubia, Monofeya, Beheira, Kafr el-Sheikh, Damietta, Ismailia, Port Said, Suez, Matruh, New Valley, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Minya, Qena, Luxor and the Red Sea.

With clashes between opponents and supporters of President Muhamed Morsi continuing, about 250,000 security personnel were deployed to facilitate the election. Judges investigated complaints from Morsi opponents regarding alleged voting fraud.

The turnout was reported as 30%. Nonetheless, by the end of the day, it was clear to both supporters and opponents that the constitution had been approved by the majority of those who voted.
