For the Summer 2023 internship program, TIMEP seeks a part-time or full-time Legal and Policy Intern who is available to work at least 20 hours a week for 8 to 12 weeks. Summer internships typically begin between May and June, but we are happy to accommodate the start date that works best for the incoming intern.
The Legal and Policy Intern will:
- Track developments of relevance to TIMEP’s mandate, particularly in the legal, judicial, and accountability spaces;
- Conduct research to support the ongoing initiatives of TIMEP’s Legal Unit, including but not limited to lawyers at risk, accountability, and transitional justice;
- Assist in the drafting of legal submissions in coordination with partner organizations;
- Help facilitate and support legal partnerships and convenings; and
- Provide policy support on TIMEP’s institution-wide advocacy priorities, including conducting background research and drafting memos and briefs.
Monthly internship stipends will be offered, so long as it does not interfere with the student’s respective university requirements for internships. Full-time interns will receive a stipend of $1000 per month, which will be prorated for part-time positions and partial months.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Preference for a candidate who is pursuing or who has recently completed a JD, LLM, or foreign equivalent. Candidates pursuing other graduate degrees in related fields (including political science, international relations, journalism, etc.) are welcome to apply.
- Familiarity with legal, judicial, and/or accountability-related issues in the MENA region.
- Familiarity with international law and/or human rights issues in the MENA region.
- Familiarity with policy issues preferred (can be U.S., EU, or UN policy).
- Preference for candidates who are proficient in Arabic (ability to read and understand).
About TIMEP’s Internship Program
TIMEP’s Internship Program is dedicated to training the next generation of policy influencers and policy makers by providing students and young professionals with:
- A hands-on learning experience in which they are paired with a staff mentor
- The opportunity to refine a set of skills and knowledge to further their professional goals
- Exposure to TIMEP’s programming and operations.
At the beginning of each internship, each TIMEP intern will work with a staff mentor to jointly identify a set of goals for the internship involving skills, knowledge, and/or experience. By the end of the program, each TIMEP intern will have had the opportunity to:
- Refine his or her skills, knowledge, and experiences in furtherance of said-goals;
- Engage with like-minded organizations and practitioners; and
- Better understand the role of civil society and nonprofit organizations like TIMEP in the MENA policy space.

Internship candidates present in Washington, DC may have the opportunity to work in a hybrid format which allows for both in-person and remote work. Internship candidates outside of Washington, DC will be able to complete the internship in an entirely remote setting. Regardless of location, the candidate’s schedule should fall within TIMEP’s office hours (between 9:00AM – 5:30PM Eastern Time.)
