Media and External Relations Associate/Manager

The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) is looking for a mission-driven and team-oriented Media and External Relations Associate/Manager to join our team.


The ideal candidate will be excited about working to ensure that the voices of advocates and experts from and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are centered in the global policy conversation by leveraging media and press engagement, digital and communications tools, and events programming. 

This position will report directly to the Deputy Director. This is a full time role and presence in the Washington, DC area is required. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Informs and implements the institute’s communications strategy with support from the Deputy Director
  • Cultivates relationships with media outlets, journalists, and media professionals around the world, including in the MENA region
  • Engages with press across all types of media to position TIMEP staff and fellows as expert resources
  • Places analyses and op-eds written by TIMEP staff, fellows, and partners externally 
  • Crafts external communications language for TIMEP, including for its website, social media, and email campaigns
  • Collaborates with TIMEP’s Editorial and Communications Associate to approve external communications language for the website and social media in Arabic
  • Manages TIMEP’s website, including its content and updates, with support from the Editorial Manager
  • Manages TIMEP social media and marketing accounts, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Bluesky, Instagram, and Mailchimp
  • Produces engaging content to support TIMEP’s communications and for use on TIMEP’s social media accounts, including, event announcements, infographics, and video clips. 
  • Creates and leverages Google ads and social media promotions to spotlight TIMEP content
  • Tracks website analytics and social media performance and provides regular reports to the team
  • Manages relationships with website and design contractors to further communications objectives
  • Collaborates with team members on communications materials for outputs, projects, programs, and fundraising
  • Informs and implements the institute’s events strategy with support from the Deputy Director
  • Cultivates relationships with like-minded organizations in Washington, DC and around the world to pursue and implement joint events programming
  • Identifies and manages opportunities for participation of TIMEP staff and fellows in conferences and external event opportunities 
  • Implements virtual private and public events from start to finish, including shaping event framing, securing speakers, executing event, and conducting post-event follow-up (~1 event per month)
  • Implements in-person private and public events in Washington, DC, including quarterly MENA Social Nights and events featuring partners traveling from the MENA region (as needed)

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (ie, journalism, communications, international relations)
  • At least three years of relevant experience (for the Associate role); at least six years of relevant experience (for the Manager role)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the MENA region, including political, social, economic, or of legal knowledge of at least one of the following MENA countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Syria, and Sudan
  • English language fluency (writing, speaking, and reading)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior experience crafting communications language in a professional setting
  • Familiarity with Google analytics and social media platform analytics 
  • Strong understanding of and experience with social media platforms
  • Track record of building and maintaining relationships with partner organizations and/or individuals
  • Track record of building and maintaining relationships with media outlets, media professionals, and/or journalists 
  • Track record of success in organizing online and/or in-person events
  • Ability to adapt to changes in TIMEP and in external environments, manage competing demands, and change approach or method to best fit situations
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage an array of tasks in tandem while following up with colleagues and stakeholders in a timely fashion
  • Commitment to being present at work and on time; to guarantee that work responsibilities are covered when absent; and to arrive at meetings and appointments on time
  • Commitment to working within the Institute’s environment as a member of the larger team to achieve general Institute goals

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Preferred

  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Arabic language proficiency (speaking, writing, and reading) 
  • Working knowledge of MailChimp
  • Experience with WordPress
  • Experience with Canva

The Media and External Relations Associate/Manager will have the opportunity to work in a hybrid format which allows for both remote and in-person work (at least two days in-person at TIMEP’s offices in Washington, DC). 

Title and salary will be commensurate with experience. Salary range will be between $60,000 and $75,000 annually.

All candidates must have authorization to work in the United States. The Media and External Relations Associate/Manager will be eligible for all of TIMEP’s benefits, which include paid time off; medical, dental, and vision insurance; and a retirement plan.
