The report and briefings are part of our larger, ongoing Egypt Security Watch project, which provides the most comprehensive available resource to monitor Egypt’s security situation, including an interactive map plotting all instances of violence or state operations, state actor, and terror group profiles, and expert analyses.
Notable developments from the briefing include:
April 2015 marked another month of a high rate of terror attacks in the country, with 112 reported attacks. In total, 70 were reported killed in terror attacks throughout Egypt in April.
Forty reported attacks took place in North Sinai, over twice the figure of the previous month. Of these, Wilayat Sinai claimed 29, the highest number of claimed attacks by the group in any month.
The founder and leader of Ajnad Misr was killed in highly publicized raid by security forces in Giza; his death was lamented in statements by both al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and al-Qaeda in the Maghreb.
A reported 2,224 alleged terrorists were arrested in April 2015; of these, 1,539 were alleged members of the Muslim Brotherhood. This represents the highest number of individuals reported arrested as terrorists in any month on record.
Also in April, TIMEP added a profile of Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar, appointed in March 2015. TIMEP updated its profile of the Allied Popular Resistance Movement (APRM) to include the first verified attack from the Execution Battalion, an APRM affiliate group.
TIMEP also expanded its report to include an appendix on methodology, elucidating its data collection methods and term definitions.
