Liwaa al-Thawra | لواء الثورة
Other Names: Revolution Brigade, Banner of the Revolution
Status: Active
Location: Qalyubia and Monofeya governorates
Characteristics: Unknown
Recent leadership: Unknown
Background: The group announced its formation on August 21, 2016, when it uploaded pictures and a dramatized video of an attack on a security checkpoint in Monofeya that left two policemen dead.
Liwaa al-Thawra’s formation has been welcomed by Hasam.
Ideology: While there are indications of ties between Liwaa al-Thawra and elements of the Muslim Brotherhood, the veracity and extent of these links are unclear. Liwaa al-Thawra notably eulogized the death of senior Brotherhood figure Muhammad Kamal, who was killed in November 2016 during a Ministry of Interior operation in Qalyubia.
The group has outlined its concerns over what it describes as a “criminal regime.”
Notable Attacks: Lewaa al-Thawra’s second claimed attack was the assassination of Brigadier General Adel Regai, commander of the Ninth Armored Division in Dahshur, on October 22 in al-Obour City. They noted in their claim that the brigadier had overseen the flooding of tunnels between Gaza and Rafah.
