On April 22, 2021, the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) hosted “Ten Years On: The Future of Organizing in MENA,” a timely virtual discussion with Inès Osman (MENA Rights Group), Isma’il Kushkush (Journalist), Mustafa Salim (The Washington Post), and Aline Fleihan (LiHaqqi), moderated by Zahra Hankir (Journalist).
In the decade since the 2010-11 protests, individuals, organizations, and movements have continued to mobilize across the MENA region. Protesters have taken to the streets to articulate political and economic demands alike, including long-term visions for accountability and anti-corruption measures. Through a moderated discussion, the panelists reflected on how these waves of protests drive home that the story of organizing in the MENA region is not over—instead, it continues to evolve and point an instructive light into dynamics across the region as a whole. Looking to Algeria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Sudan, the conversation addressed what protest movements in these countries are doing similarly or differently, the tools and tactics being used, and the lessons learned over the past decade, while reflecting on how these mobilizations have met the evolving challenges of organizing on the ground, in exile, and in cyberspace today.
