Creation of Freedom and Justice Party Announced

Members of the Muslim Brotherhood today announced the creation of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), following through on a February 21 pledge to establish a political party. Muhammad Morsi, the leader of the new party, described it as “not an Islamist party in the old understanding; it is not theocratic.” In addition to naming Morsi as the FJP’s president, the Brotherhood’s Shura Council selected as FJP officers Essam al-Erian (vice president) and Saad Al-Katatni (secretary-general).
