High Turnout as Second Stage of Parliamentary Elections Begins

The second stage of parliamentary elections began today, coming off large Islamist gains in the first stage. The second stage included the governorates of Giza, Ismailia, Suez, Beni Suef, Aswan, Sharqia, Beheira, Monofeya and Sohag.

Turnout was high, requiring polling locations to extend voting by two hours to 9 p.m. While mostly peaceful, opposing supporters fired guns.  Seven people were detained and no deaths were reported.
