First Day of Constitutional Referendum

The first day of the constitutional referendum took place today. The Muslim Brotherhood claimed that 57% of ballots cast supported the new constitution, while the New York Times reported long lines yet low voter turnout. Voting occurred in Cairo, Alexandria, Dakhalia, Gharbia, Sharqia, Asyut, Sohag, Aswan, North Sinai, and South Sinai.

News media also reported electoral violence. At about 11 p.m. in Cairo, security sources claimed that Islamists attacked a Wafd Party newspaper with Molotov cocktails and birdshot.
