Second round of the People’s Assembly Elections

The second round of the People’s Assembly elections occurred today. Despite participating in the first round, the Muslim Brotherhood and Wafd Party boycotted the run-off elections, alleging fraudulent activity on the part of the government in the first round. Human Rights Watch stated that it had received reports of election-related human rights violations.

The Supreme Electoral Commission, a body appointed by President Mubarak, cited a 67% voter turnout rate for the second round. In total, the National Democratic Party (NDP) won 420 of the 504 contested seats. Opposition groups won 14 seats, and independents won 70 seats.
