First of Three Stages of Run-off Parliamentary Elections Begins

A run-off round of Egypt’s parliamentary elections began today with polling in Cairo, Alexandria, Asyut, Luxor, Port Said, Kafr el-Sheikh, Damietta, Fayoum and the Red Sea Governorates. The top two candidates for each seat competed, with the win to be attributed to the candidate with the highest vote count.

Media outlets reported violence between rival Islamist groups, leading to lower voter turnout than the 52% figure reported for the first rounds.
