Run-off for Shura Council Elections in the First Stage

February 7 marked the first run-off of the Shura Council elections. Unlike the run-offs during parliamentary elections, the Shura Council run-offs last only a single day. Today polls opened at 8 a.m. and closed at 7 p.m. Elections took place in Cairo, Alexandria, Fayoum, Asyut, Red Sea, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Monofeya, New Valley, North Sinai, South Sinai, Damietta and Qena.

The Carter Center attributed the low turnout to the short notice given to voters of the date of the election. Nonetheless, the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) concluded that the Shura Council elections were conducted in a free and fair manner.
