Former President Morsi Charged with Espionage

On February 23, 2014, former president Muhammad Morsi was formally charged with espionage during his Cairo court hearing alongside 35 other Muslim Brotherhood members who face similar charges. Morsi’s charges include giving state secrets to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and conspiring with terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The hearing was aired on state television, which is reminiscent of the initial broadcasting of Hosni Mubarak’s trial. According to the prosecutor, there is evidence that classified reports concerning Egyptian national security were shared with the aforementioned foreign militant groups. If Morsi is found guilty, he could be sentenced to death.
