Demonstrators Protest Military Power Grabs; Runoff Results Delayed

Thousands of demonstrators, primarily supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood but including some secular revolutionaries, gathered tonight in Tahrir Square to denounce the military’s recent perceived power grabs. Among the causes for concern was a constitutional declaration that gave the military legislative and budgetary authority following the court-ordered dissolution of the recently elected parliament.

The demonstration came as election officials postponed the announcement of the winner of the runoff for the presidential election. The delay supposedly is the result of the election commission needing additional time “to continue viewing the candidates’ [over 400] appeals” relating to potential elections violations. The appeals included “allegations about the printing of premarket ballots, polling places with the number of ballots different from the number of voters, repeat voters, and dead voters.”
