Protestors Gather to Mark “Nakba”

Egyptian protesters gathered in Tahrir Square to mark the “nakba” (“catastrophe”), a reference to the 1948 establishment of the state of Israel. Thousands of protesters called for “solidarity with the Palestinians” and “national unity after attacks on Egyptian churches.” An additional protest took place outside the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. There, protesters were dispersed with warning shots from Egyptian troops after “demanding the expulsion of the ambassador and the severance of ties with the Jewish state.”
