Muslim Brotherhood Candidates Banned from Contesting Elections


A court in in Alexandria ruled today that Egypt’s Supreme Election Commission cannot accept nominations from the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing. The decision came following a petition by an anti-Brotherhood group, which cited the Brotherhood’s recent designation by the Egyptian government as a terrorist group and the new constitution’s prohibition on religiously-based political parties, to keep the FJP off the upcoming presidential and representative council ballots. The FJP had been the country’s dominant political party, winning elections for parliament, the Shura Council, and the presidency.
