Presidential Election Dates Announced

The Presidential Elections Commission announced today that the presidential elections would take place on May 26-27 and that potential candidates have until April 20th to enter their names as candidates. This announcement comes days after Egypt’s army chief and defense minister Abdul-Fattah al-Sisi resigned and declared his candidacy for president. He will be running on a secular platform as an independent. Many expect al-Sisi to win the election, especially as many would-be candidates are not running due to a lack of confidence in the fairness of the upcoming election. The only other candidate so far is the leftist politician Hamdeen Sabbahi.
