More Cases of Self-Immolation|Mahfouz Calls for Protests

Ahmed Hashem el-Sayed, a 25-year-old, unemployed man, set himself on fire in Alexandria in protest of the government. Although hospitalized, el-Sayed died from third degree burns later in the day.

In Cairo today, Farouk Hassan, a 40-year-old lawyer, was reported to have shouted slogans against rising prices before dousing himself in petrol and self-immolating.

Following the death of Ahmed Hashem el-Sayed, Asmaa Mahfouz’s revolutionary vlog is uploaded to Facebook, calling upon Egyptians to demonstrate on January 25.

In the video, Mahfouz called on Egyptians to voice their demands for human rights, dignity, and their grievances with the Mubarak regimes. Her words, calling on Egyptians to gather in Tahrir Square on January 25, 2011, changed the course of Egyptian life: “If you think yourself a man, come with me on 25 January. Whoever says women shouldn’t go to protests because they will get beaten, let him have some honor and manhood and come with me on 25 January. Whoever says it is not worth it because there will only be a handful of people, I want to tell him, ‘You are the reason behind this, and you are a traitor, just like the president or any security cop who beats us in the streets.”
