SCAF Issues New Voting and Parliamentary Laws

Today the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) amended the Law on the Exercise of Political Rights (no.73/1956). Specifically, SCAF amended articles 40, 43, and 45-50. The articles generally stiffened penalties for election-related activities, such as violence, bribes, or religious campaigning.

SCAF also issued the Decree Law of the People’s Assembly, an amended version of Law 38/1972. The new law stipulated that half of the new People’s Assembly were to be elected by first-past-the-post and half by closed-list proportional representation. It maintained quotas for peasants, workers, and women (although quotas for women were relaxed).
