Shura Council Elections Continue amid Debates on Military Rule

Today marked the second day of Shura Council elections in Cairo, Alexandria, Gharbia, Dakahlia, Monofeya, Damietta, North Sinai, South Sinai, Fayoum, Asyut, Qena, the Red Sea and the New Valley. Turnout during for Shura Council elections saw a marked decrease from the parliamentary elections. As the Council does not hold any legislative powers, speculation indicated that the low turnout was tied to perceptions of the Shura Council as politically ineffectual.

During the day, activists and revolutionary groups disagreed over the timing of the military’s handover of governmental power to an elected, civilian government. The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) claimed to win between 30% and 60% of the vote. Other sources corroborated the claimed successes of the FJP and Nour Party.
