Presidential Elections Begin

The 2012 presidential election began today. As polls opened just after 8 a.m. some reports pointed to long lines, while others stated that turnout was light for much of the rather hot day. Watchdog organizations and the April 6 movement reported violations of electoral law, such as campaigning during the statutory electoral silence period and within the 250 meter no campaigning zones near polling stations. The polls closed at 9 p.m. to end the first day of voting.

Influential activist Wael Ghonim tweeted that he voted for Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fetouh.
