Egyptian Christian Mohamed Hegazy Arrested for Sectarian Strife

Mohammed Hegazy, a prominent Egyptian Christian, was arrested today by Egyptian security forces for allegedly inciting “sectarian strife.” Hegazy has been detained in an undisclosed location. Hegazy, also known by his Christian name, Bishoy Armiya, became the first Egyptian to convert from Islam to Christianity and subsequently sued the Egyptian government to change the religion listed on his identity card. His public struggle with the government and Shari’a law made him a target for controversy and threats from various religious factions. If charged with apostasy, Hegazy could face a sentence of life in prison.
