220 Protesters Referred to Prosecution for Criminal Trials

Cairo prosecutors have referred 220 of the 1,079 protesters arrested in January 25, 2014, clashes between protesters and security forces to criminal court. The demonstrators—all of whom were arrested in downtown Cairo during clashes there—stand accused of a variety of crimes, including assaulting security forces with firearms and Molotov cocktails, attempted murder, and the destruction of public and private property. The protesters, a mixture of liberals and Morsi supporters, had gathered to mark the third anniversary of the January 2011 uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak. All 220 will be tried together.
