Cairo Court of Urgent Matters Rules that Ansar Bayt Al Maqdis Is a Terrorist Organization

The Cairo Court of Urgent Matters has declared Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) a terrorist organization. A lawyer named Ahmed Ibrahim filed a lawsuit to force interim President Adly Mansour, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, and Minister of the Interior Mohammed Ibrahim to designate the group a terrorist organization. The complaint noted that the group has declared that they are responsible for numerous terrorist attacks, and the British Parliament and US Department of State have previously designated this group a terrorist organization. ABM claimed responsibility for an attack against a Sinai pipeline exporting gas to Israel in August 2012 and for a rocket attack on the Israeli city of Eilat in September 2012. There was also a suicide bombing in October 2013 in al-Tor that killed three people and injured more than 45. The group has successfully targeted heads of state including assassination and conducted multiple bombings. If upheld by the Egyptian government, punishments for captured militants who are members of ABM would be more severe.
