Anniversary of Mohamed Mahmoud Street Protests

Today marks the first anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud Street protests which left over 40 people dead and pushed the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to announce a deadline for handing over power to a civilian government.

Clashes began on this year anniversary when protesters attempted to destroy a barrier which was erected in an effort to end last year’s violence. This prompted police response which led to escalation: three police conscripts and three protesters were injured.
