Constitution Draft Approved Months ahead of Schedule

Today the Constituent Assembly approved a final draft of a new constitution. Human Rights Watch stated that the document “provides for basic protections against arbitrary detention and torture and for some economic rights but fails to end military trials of civilians or to protect freedom of expression and religion.” The constitution was finished amid continuing protests and months ahead of expectations.

The Constituent Assembly has been working without 15 members who had previously withdrawn, including all Christians who were originally appointed.
